Markets in Asia continued to rally as the Hang Seng passed the critical 30,000 level and hit its highest level for 10 years. All major regional bourses followed. The Nikkei rose 0.51% – this despite the dollar losing some ground against the yen – the ASX was last seen up 0.38% and the Shanghai Composite gained 0.61%. Can this continue? There are voices of caution in the market. “We are concerned by the high valuation of US assets and the spill-over effect on Asia of a correction in US equities, US Treasuries or both,” warned Frank Benzimra, head of Asia equity strategy at Société Générale. “Global growth continues to surprise on the upside and has reached its highest level since the Great Financial Crisis. However, this does not mean that equity returns are going to accelerate from the remarkable level of the last 12 months,” he added. But the influx of foreign currency into the region, suggests that many think that the rally still has legs.
